I am an Apprentice/Employer and I have a safeguarding concern (any bullying, abuse, neglect etc.), what do I do?

If you have a concern you would like to report about yourself or someone else please contact the designated Safeguarding Officer at NowSkills. Daniel Wells is the responsible person and can be contacted here. If the concern is serious then further action may be taken to protect anyone involved.

I am an Apprentice and would like to speak to someone in confidence about a personal issue.

In the first instance it is recommended that you ask to speak to your Tutor/Assessor in private and they should be able to help you. All staff at NowSkills are made aware of confidentiality unless they need to report anything further in case of anyone being at risk of harm etc.

If you don’t feel comfortable speaking to your Tutor/Assessor you can also contact our aftercare team using the details here.

How long is the course/an Apprenticeship?

All of our apprenticeships last for a minimum of 12 months, but could last slightly longer depending on the apprentice and/or employer circumstances. Some of that time may be spend off-the-job in a NowSkills training centre – it is not a college and all apprentices are attending as employees of their respective employer.

How much should an Apprentice be paid?

The current Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.40 per hour (October 2016), working at least 30 hours a week. This rate is for all Apprentices under 19 or if an Apprentice is 19 or over and in their first year of a level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship. All other Apprentices are entitled to the National Minimum Wage for their age. For latest infomration please visit:

I am an Employer and would like to apply for the National Apprenticeship Grant (AGE 16-24) for £1,500.

For more information and to check if you are eligible for the grant, please see:

Alternatively, speak to a member of the team at NowSkills and they will be able to assist you in filling in the paperwork for this grant and clarify your eligibility. The general rule of thumb is that you are most likely eligible for the grant if you have fewer than 50 employees in the UK, not had an employee start an Apprenticeship in the 12 month period prior to the start date of the first Apprentice for whom you apply for the grant (you can apply for up to 5 x Apprentices) and you commit to employing your Apprentice for a minimum of 12 months.

You are eligible to apply for the grant after your Apprentice has been in employment for 13 weeks. Please allow a further 9 weeks from when your grant application is submitted for it to be processed and paid to you.

If you are applying for the Liverpool Youth Contract (below), you cannot also apply for AGE 16-24.

I am an Employer and would like to apply for the Liverpool Youth Contract of up to £3,500 from Liverpool Council.

The Liverpool Youth Contract is offering businesses across the city an Apprenticeship Wage Subsidy of up to £3,500. Employers will support the recruitment of young people into Apprenticeships (Liverpool residents, 16/17 years of age who are not currently in Employment, Education or Training). Full details of the eligibility and how to apply for this are found here:

I am an Apprentice and I am unable to go into work or training today, who should I contact?

If you are unable to go to work due to an illness or any other issue, then please contact the relevant person in your workplace before your working day starts (or whatever is explained to you by your Employer). If you are unable to make it into training then please contact the relevant Tutor/Assessor prior to 9a.m. NowSkills actively encourages all Apprentices to make every effort to attend work or training and to keep unnecessary absences to an absolute minimum.

I am an Apprentice/Employer and have a HR-related query? e.g. holidays, sick pay, maternity etc.

You can speak to any member of the NowSkills team on any of the above numbers or alternatively email All apprentices are treated as employees and are thus entitled to all the same employee rights.

I am an Apprentice and I am struggling with my Apprenticeship, who can help me?

In the first instance please speak to your Tutor/Assessor as they will be able to work with you to put together a plan to support you. If you are still unsatisfied with the support from your Tutor/Assessor please contact us here.

What are the dates Apprentices are required to attend the NowSkills training centre?

As part of the NowSkills IT Systems & Networking Advanced Apprenticeship, all apprentices are required to attend 12 weeks of training based in one of our training centres. Apprentices usually attend weeks 1-6 soon after starting employment and then complete weeks 7-12 at a later date. As long as apprentices complete the training weeks in order and complete all weeks within 12 months of his/her start date, NowSkills is able to offer some flexibility on this. Please speak to the relevant Tutor/Assessor regarding the specific dates. Alternatively you can email to clarify the training dates.

NowSkills will try to be as flexible as possible when it comes to off-the-job training, but please consider that we have to take into account employer needs, apprentice start and end dates, holidays and also Tutor/Assessor availability.

I am an Apprentice and I no longer have a job, can I still continue with my Apprenticeship?

NowSkills takes its social responsibility very seriously. If you find yourself out of work whilst on your Apprenticeship then NowSkills will work hard to help secure you another job. Please inform your Tutor/Assessor as soon as you find yourself out of work so that steps can be taken immediately to find a new role.

I am an Apprentice and I have a concern with Health & Safety in my workplace or NowSkills training centre?

If you genuinely have a serious concern about Health & Safety please contact us immediately on 01204 262431 or email putting “Health & Safety Concern” as the subject header. NowSkills takes its responsibility of promoting a safe working environment very seriously.

I am an Apprentice and may need some support getting to the NowSkills training centre.

In this case it is best to speak to your relevant Tutor/Assessor on an individual basis and he/she will be able to advise you what to do. Contributions will be made towards travel expenses on a case-by-case basis and will be dictated by need.

I am an Apprentice and don’t think that my Employer is going to keep me on after my Apprenticeship ends, is there anything NowSkills can do to help?

NowSkills will work with any suitable apprentice that isn’t kept on at the end of his/her apprenticeship to look for any suitable roles, with CV writing and interview skills. NowSkills cannot guarantee to find a job on your behalf – this is down to the individual apprentice.

However, for the majority of NowSkills apprentices, they are kept on and offered a full time role at the end of their Apprenticeship.
