Information for Parents and Guardians of Apprentices

IT Apprenticeships

Apprentice parent information:

As a parent or guardian, helping your child choose their next step after school or college can feel overwhelming. With so many options—university, apprenticeships, college courses, gap years, and entry-level jobs—it’s important to understand what each path offers and how it aligns with your child’s strengths and ambitions.

Some learners thrive in academic environments and choose university for its subject depth and social experience. Others prefer practical, hands-on learning and want to enter the workforce sooner. Apprenticeships offer a powerful alternative, combining paid employment with structured training and recognised qualifications.

At NowSkills, we specialise in digital apprenticeships—a fast-growing sector offering exciting careers in tech, data, and marketing. If your child is considering this route, we’re here to support both of you with clear guidance, expert training, and a commitment to their success.

University Costs vs Apprenticeship Earnings

University tuition fees in England are currently up to £9,250 per year, with many students also taking out maintenance loans to cover living costs. This can result in an average student debt of £45,000 or more upon graduation. Graduates begin repaying their loans once they earn over £25,000, with 9% deducted from income above that threshold (correct at August 2025).

In contrast, apprenticeships are completely free for learners. The government or employer covers all training costs, and apprentices earn a salary while they learn. According to UCAS, the average salary for apprentices is £20,124, with degree apprenticeships averaging £32,502. Apprentices also avoid student debt and start building financial independence from day one.

This means your child can gain valuable experience, earn a wage, and qualify for a career—all without the financial burden of university.

How NowSkills Compares to a College

NowSkills delivers official digital apprenticeships under a direct contract with the Department for Education. Like colleges, we’re inspected by Ofsted and meet rigorous quality standards. But as an independent training provider, we can focus exclusively on digital and IT apprenticeships.

This independence allows us to:

  • Specialise in high-demand digital careers like IT Support, Data Analysis, and Digital Marketing
  • Recruit tutors with real commercial experience
  • Design agile, industry-relevant training programmes
  • Respond quickly to emerging digital trends

Unlike traditional colleges that offer a broad curriculum, NowSkills is laser-focused on preparing learners for success in the digital workplace.

Stronger Employer Connections

NowSkills has built strong relationships with employers across the UK—from innovative startups to established tech firms. We work closely with employers to create meaningful apprenticeship roles, ensuring every placement offers genuine progression and skill development.

Our Employer Engagement and Recruitment Teams:

  • Matches learners to suitable roles
  • Supports line managers and mentors
  • Ensures every workplace is safe, supportive, and career-focused

We also screen over 500 applicants per month, selecting motivated learners and placing them where they can thrive.
