Top tips for future apprentices…

Interviews for apprenticeships

Applying for an apprenticeship can be an exciting opportunity to kickstart your career in the digital and IT industry. However, before you can begin your journey, you’ll need to ace your apprenticeship interview. The interview is a crucial step in the selection process, as it allows the employer to assess your skills, knowledge, and suitability for the role. To help you prepare, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to ace your apprenticeship interview for digital and IT apprenticeships.

What is an apprenticeship interview?

Before we start let’s discuss what an apprenticeship interview actually is. An apprenticeship interview is essentially a job interview for an apprenticeship position. Apprenticeship interviews are typically similar to other job interviews, but they may focus more on your individual skills and potential, rather than previous work experience.

Why is it important to prepare for an apprenticeship interview?

Now we know what an apprenticeship interview is. Why is it important that you take the appropriate steps to make sure you’re ready? Interviews are where you get the chance to make a good first impression to potential employers. The interviewer will form an opinion of you within the first few seconds of meeting you, so it’s important to make a good first impression by demonstrating your competence and knowledge.

Step 1: Research the apprenticeship and the company

Before you go to your apprenticeship interview, it is important to research the apprenticeship program and the company you are applying for. This will help you to understand what the apprenticeship entails, what the company is looking for in a candidate, and how to answer apprenticeship interview questions well.

You can research the apprenticeship on the company’s website or by speaking to current apprentices. You can also research the company by reading news articles and online reviews.

Here are some specific things to research about the company:

+ What are the company’s values and culture?

+ What is the company’s mission and vision?

+ What are the company’s products or services?

+ What are the company’s strengths and weaknesses?

+ What are the company’s competitors?

Step 2: Prepare your answers to common apprenticeship interview questions

One of the best ways to prepare for an apprenticeship interview is to practise your answers to common apprenticeship interview questions. Here are some common apprenticeship interview questions we have discovered by asking our apprentices and employers at NowSkills:

+ Tell me about yourself.

+ Why are you interested in this apprenticeship?

+ What are your strengths and weaknesses?

+ Where do you see yourself in five years?

+ What experience do you have with [relevant skill or technology]?

+ Why do you want to work for this company?

+ What can you contribute to this apprenticeship?

One of the best ways to prepare for any interview is to practise your answers to common interview questions. It is important to be positive and enthusiastic when answering apprenticeship interview questions. Your goal is to show the interviewer that you are excited about the opportunity and that you are confident in your ability to succeed in their company.

Step 3: Practise your answers

Once you have researched the company, and prepared your answers to common apprenticeship interview questions, it is important to practise your answers. This will help you to feel more confident and prepared during your interview.

Here are some essential tips we think will be useful to you when practising your interview answers:

+ Practice with a friend or family member. Ask a friend or family member to listen to your practice answers and give you feedback. They can help you to identify areas where you need to improve.

+ Practice in front of a mirror. Practising in front of a mirror can help you to get comfortable with speaking and projecting your voice.

+ Record yourself and watch back. Recording yourself and watching back can help you to identify any areas where you need to improve your body language or delivery.

In addition, when practising your answers, it is important to be mindful of the following:

+ Be specific and provide examples. When answering questions, try to give specific examples of your skills and experience. This will help the interviewer to better understand your qualifications.

+ Be enthusiastic. Show the interviewer that you are excited about the opportunity and that you are confident in your ability to succeed.

+ Be honest and authentic. The interviewer wants to get to know the real you. Don’t try to be someone you’re not.

Step 4: Dress professionally and arrive on time

Now that you are prepared you may be asking yourself. What to wear to an apprenticeship interview. First impressions matter, so it’s important to dress professionally for your apprenticeship interview. This means wearing clean, neat and appropriate clothing. For example, you might wear a suit and tie for a more formal apprenticeship, or business casual for a less formal apprenticeship. Ultimately, it depends on what the employer specifies in the job advertisement.

To arrive on time for your apprenticeship interview, plan your route ahead of time and give yourself plenty of time to get to the interview. If you are driving, factor in parking time and traffic conditions. If you are taking public transportation, allow for extra time in case of delays. If you are running late, call or email the interviewer as soon as possible to let them know.

Step 5: Ask questions

Asking questions at your apprenticeship interview is a great way to show the interviewer that you are interested in the apprenticeship and the company. It also gives you an opportunity to learn more about the business before you make a decision about whether or not to accept the position.

What Questions To Ask At The End Of An Apprenticeship Interview?

+ What are the next steps in the interview process?

+ When can I expect to hear back from you?

+ Is there anything else I can provide you with to help you make your decision?

+ What are the biggest challenges and rewards of this apprenticeship?

+ What are the opportunities for advancement within the company?

+ What is the company culture like?

+ What are the company’s values and mission?

You can also ask questions about the specific apprenticeship program or the company’s industry. For example, if you are applying for a software development apprenticeship, you could ask questions about the company’s software development process or the types of software applications that the company develops.

If you want to stand out, asking thoughtful and relevant questions will show the interviewer that you are interested in the apprenticeship and the company, and that you are serious about your career development.

Once the apprenticeship interview ends, be sure to thank the interviewer for it, and if you really want to showcase enthusiasm you could send a thank-you email after the interview.
